I cannot recommend this textbook highly enough. Based on a successful course at Oxford University, this book covers a wide range of such problems ranging from the approximation of functions and integrals to the approximate solution of algebraic, transcendental, differential and integral equations. There are numerous exercises for students.
But this book will tell you numrrical a method will converge and when a method is better. Throughout, the authors keep an eye on the analytical basis for the work and add interest with historical notes on the development of the subject. A poor linear algebra background will require remediation before starting this book. It is an analysis text, and it does a great job covering the basic topics in a first year graduate course. The authors go further than simply providing recipes for solving computational problems.
