An Introduction to Numerical Analysis

Introduction to Numerical Analysis: This is an excellent resource to brush up on your undergraduate numerical analysis. Tk Nikbin rated it it was amazing Apr 01, Edward Zeng rated it did not like it Apr 17, Of course, no text can be everything to everyone.

I cannot recommend this textbook highly enough. Based on a successful course at Oxford University, this book covers a wide range of such problems ranging from the approximation of functions and integrals to the approximate solution of algebraic, transcendental, differential and integral equations. There are numerous exercises for students.

But this book will tell you numrrical a method will converge and when a method is better. Throughout, the authors keep an eye on the analytical basis for the work and add interest with historical notes on the development of the subject. A poor linear algebra background will require remediation before starting this book. It is an analysis text, and it does a great job covering the basic topics in a first year graduate course. The authors go further than simply providing recipes for solving computational problems.

In numerical linear algebra, it includes LU factorization with pivoting, Gerschgorin’s theorem of eigenvalue positions, Calculating eigenvalues by Jacobi plane rotation, Householder tridiagonalization, Sturm sequence property for tridiagonal symmetric matrix.

Topics covered in this text that I have found particularly useful over the years introdiction polynomial interpolation and quadrature. User Review – Flag as inappropriate I’m a physics student. It contains a lot of material, but I do not feel nuemrical is well suited for a first course in Numerical Analysis at an undergraduate university.

The authors then develop the necessary machinery including iteration, interpolation, boundary-value problems and finite elements. Amazon Rapids Fun stories for kids on the go.

This textbook is written primarily for undergraduate mathematicians but it will also appeal to students working at an advanced level in other disciplines.
