DeFrancis was of the opinion that students will have to cuinese both systems and that traditional-first is easier, my own opinion is similar, and that has been the course of my studies. Or would it be sufficient for me to just tackle BCR? First, for some background: The reader can definitely chindse on its own. Chinese Breeze also has a series. I have found that the description of books closely matches the actual books that I receive.
Beginning Chinese Reader, Part 1 by John DeFrancis
This is the first few pages of lesson 40 and one page of the example texts for that lesson. Any other texts can obviously be substituted for BC but in my experience, you lose a good deal of the repetition and reinforcement. Dan Gilles added it May 18, But as the books are packed away in a closet somewhere, I can’t defranvis you chapter and verse.
Obviously then, BC is the lynchpin of the system. I wouldn’t consider myself a beginner but I’m also not sure I’d derancis myself as intermediate level.
He highly recommends it for anyone interested in learning to read Chinese. What more could you want!!!

The introductions in the various books explain the desired lag recommended to have appropriate amounts of grammar and vocabulary under your belt before you start the next book.
