Great insight into the mind of an addict and the writing has me wanting to pick up his other memoirs; really enjoy his narrative style. I also hope the book shows how the results are always better when you stop skating across the augusren of your life and really go inside and dig around for the good stuff.
Burroughs starts to feel depressed and realizes he misses alcohol, the loss of which “is like dealing with a death in the family. Burroughs characters are human but they seem to be fantasy.
Not that I was surprised by this. And then remember how I used my fingers to push up the palm and drug just my finger tips from the top to the bottom? Being from the south myself, that threw me off a little. The memoir ends with Burroughs getting clean and helping another alcoholic friend of his through his recovery.

Never outlining or consciously structuring the book, Burroughs wrote, “as fast as I could type, to keep up. Burroughs has two affairs here. But mostly for Burroughs, the sober pages are just an excuse for the author to tell us all about himself and his dull relationships with co-workers and boyfriends. Enjoyed reading his point of view. First time that I actually liked Burroughs. It’s funny and it’s true and it’s real.
The second part of auguzten novel deals with Burroughs’ first bout with sobriety since leaving the rehab program. My first impression was not a good one. I was immediately smitten with Augusten’s playfully sardonic story telling.
I had no idea what I was saying. Augusten’s relationships perfectly capture what I think is a quintessentially urban tendency of people nowadays to tirelessly compensate for what they think they are missing in life. Augusten Burroughs has written a lot of memoirs, most famously Running with Scissors, but this one’s a bit different since it’s mostly an adaptation of a diary he was keeping at the time.
