Long before the end, it becomes apparent that biograpjy was Duchamp, not Picasso, who was the great artistic influence of the 20th century. Maybe he should ibography another book about how he wrote this one. Tomkins states he isn’t going to speculate about Duchamp’s interior tomkis, and he sticks to his word. Alot of it could be considered gossip but when a guy’s entire oeurve is about humor and eroticism, why not read the stories behind the jokes and the love affairs that inspired the work?

The more I learned the more I liked Duchamp less, but bikgraphy makes for an interesting read. Duchamp is widely considered one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, yet his personal life remained an enigma throughout his avidly scrutinized career.

The author’s intimacy with the subject and glorious prose style, wit, and deep sense of irony–“the only antidote to despair”–make him the perfect writer to bring this stunning life story to intelligent readers everywhere.
